It has been two months and one week since my tomatoes germinated. I have been waiting to transplant these tomatoes for a couple of weeks, but I had to wait to harvest my Pak Choi. Check out my older posts for more info on the planting process. #tomatoes
I fed the tomatoes regularly using liquid organic fertilizer. I watered the tomatoes every day using a 1G spray bottle. Every 2nd or 3rd watering I used the fertilizer. I had another 1G pray bottle on hand pre-mixed with the fertilizer. Check out my product’s page for the exact fertilizer I use.
Things to remember while transplanting:
- Never transplant during high temperatures, morning is typically the best time
- Loosen up the roots of the plant a little before putting it in the soil
- Add a fertilizer to the soil with a high Nitrogen content. This will help the plant absorb the light while the roots are adapting to the new environment
- Wet the plant after transplanting
Building a trellis to support the tomatoes is necessary for indeterminate tomatoes. Indeterminate tomatoes will keep growing until the weather gets too cold for them to continue growing. A trellis will add support for the plant. Once the tomato starts fruiting the fruits can become too heavy for the branch to support. This may lead to the branch breaking off. Some people will allow the plant to grow over the trellis and continue back down towards the ground on the other side.
Frequent pruning of the tomatoes is also required. Until the plant is big enough I will be pruning all of the flowers off of it. I figure I will let flowers start in July. This will ensure that the plant uses its energy to grow deep roots and a good foundation. I will also be pruning all of the suckers. Suckers eventually grow into a separate main stem producing its own fruit. However this stem is often too weak to support fruit. Moreover allowing these suckers to grow takes energy away from the main plant. If you miss a sucker and it grows to around 6 inches you can always cut it off and start a clone. Excellent way of telling, and nice article to obtain facts on the topic of
my presentation subject matter, which i am going to deliver in college.
