I planted my cauliflower seedlings in April. I knew it was too early to plant but we had over a week of warm weather so I decided to go for it. I got 4 different varieties of cauliflower some of which I am growing in containers. I got white, green, purple and orange cauliflower. This is my first time growing cauliflower so I am learning as I go.
About a week after planting the temperatures dropped and we got a lot of rain. There was even talk of snow. I had to cover the plants until the weather warmed up. I used a thick plastic I had and just stapled that to the ply of the bed. Luckily all of the plants survived and I removed the plastic cover after a little over 2 weeks.
Overall the plants are growing well. The leaves are getting pretty big. However the plants in the container are much smaller. There is something living under my shed that keeps having the leaves for breakfast. I have been giving them some water fertilizer that is rich in nitrogen. Which seems to be allowing the plant to recover quickly. I also covered the containers with some wire so the animals cannot eat the leaves.
We had some issues with snails eating the cauliflower. It was weird because we seen the damage to the leaves but we did not see any actual bugs. We sprayed the leaves with Neem oil but that did not seem to work. I also have a black light flashlight which I thought would make pests grow but it also did not work. Finally after a rainy day as the sun went down we decided to comb through each leaf and low and behold we found snails. After trying some other remedies like beer traps we found some special pellets for snails and slugs. You can find the product on my product page. Check out the video on TikTok.
Take a look at the plants a couple of weeks after planting.
Here they are a month after planting. We added some fertilizer to the soil before planting so I am not using any liquid fertilizer on these. You can check out the different fertilizers I use on my products page. I use a variation of liquid and solid fertilizers. I hope the cauliflower will continue doing well. I am looking forward to eating them.
